Garmin Epix (Gen 2) Training Features

7/7 training intelligence features2022$700-900

The AMOLED sibling of the Fenix 7. Training Readiness added via firmware update. Premium display with full training intelligence.

Best For

Athletes who want Fenix-level features with the best display Garmin offered in 2022. The watch that proved AMOLED belonged on outdoor watches.

Our Verdict

The Epix Gen 2 was Garmin's first serious AMOLED multisport watch, and it changed the game. Before it, athletes choosing Garmin had to accept MIP displays. The Epix proved you could have a vibrant screen and still get multi-day battery life. Training Readiness arrived via firmware update. With the Fenix 8 now offering AMOLED natively, the Epix Gen 2 is a previous-generation watch — but at current discounted prices, it remains one of the best ways to get full Garmin training intelligence with a premium display.

Garmin Epix (Gen 2): In-Depth Review

The Epix Gen 2 was a milestone for Garmin. It proved that an AMOLED display could work in a serious multisport watch without destroying battery life. Before the Epix, athletes who wanted vibrant displays chose Apple Watch or Samsung and accepted inferior training metrics. The Epix offered both for the first time.

Training intelligence features are identical to the Fenix 7 after the firmware update that added Training Readiness. All 7 features work well, though the Elevate v4 sensor is a generation behind current offerings. For most training purposes the accuracy is sufficient, but athletes who rely heavily on wrist-based HR during high-intensity intervals may notice discrepancies that the newer v5 and v6 sensors have addressed.

The display remains impressive even by 2025 standards. Garmin's AMOLED implementation in the Epix Gen 2 balanced brightness, battery consumption, and always-on usability in a way that set the template for the Forerunner 265, 965, and Fenix 8. Maps look sharp, data fields are readable at a glance, and the indoor experience is dramatically better than any MIP watch.

The awkward position the Epix Gen 2 now occupies is that the Fenix 8 essentially absorbed it. The Fenix 8 offers AMOLED in a Fenix body with newer sensors and additional features. But the Epix Gen 2 at its current discounted price offers 90% of the experience at 50-60% of the cost, making it one of the smartest value plays for athletes who want premium training data on a premium screen.

Pros

  • Pioneering AMOLED display still looks excellent
  • All 7 training intelligence features with firmware update
  • Fenix-grade durability and build quality
  • Massive discounts available as previous-generation model
  • Full offline maps and triathlon mode

Cons

  • Older Elevate v4 sensor less accurate than current generation
  • Effectively replaced by the Fenix 8 AMOLED
  • Only one size option (47mm) unlike the Epix Pro
  • Shorter battery life than MIP Fenix alternatives
